Abstract

AbstractMismanagement of diabetes and other precipitating causes, as well as intercurrent physical illness, were sought in a prospective study of the presentation of diabetic ketoacidosis. Out of 30 episodes, half were associated with mismanagement of diabetes; in six, it appeared deliberate. Thus, the mismanagement of diabetes is an important factor in the pathogenesis of ketoacidosis. Improved education of patients may prevent a substantial proportion of episodes, reducing morbidity and the costs of hospital admission.
