Abstract

Descriptions and illustrations are offered for five new species together with refined descriptions of six South American Sphagna recently studied from authentic specimens. Two no- menclatural changes are also made (for S. steerei Crum, non Andrus, and S. aequiporosum Crum, non Warnst). I have had occasion to study authentic material of several South American Sphagna, and I take this opportunity to give them some publicity. Because Warnstorf's types are difficult to come by, it seems desirable to offer these descriptions and illustra- tions. In general, Warnstorf's descriptions in the Sphagnologia Universalis (1911) are quite good, but many of his names have fallen into synonymy, whether correctly so or not, and need this kind of confirmation. In addition, several new species are recorded from Colombia and Brazil and two no- menclatural corrections are made.
