Abstract

The myth of Narcissus has always been of central interest to research dealing with Morungen’s Mir ist geschehen als einem kindeline–his much acclaimed Narziss-Lied. On top of that, psycho-analytic studies have taken up on this mythological notion and have linked Morungen’s text to the phenomenon of Narcissism. Yet, the conceptual limitations of this phenomenon do not do justice to the complex configuration of Morungen’s text just standing for themselves. Accordingly, the article adds another perspective to the narcissistic one: a masochistic one. In a close reading the article points out the ambivalence between these two phenomena in Morungen’s text and hints at the aesthetic and poetic value created by this ambivalence.
