Abstract

By thinking about narcissism in conjunction with aging, we start to recognize various forms of narcissism. The charge of “narcissistic” can be used as a cultural curb of whole groups, while the same behaviors may go unnoted for other groups. In addition, by looking at narcissists' paradoxical dependence upon others to maintain grandiose self-images, we can consider how some elderly are doubly at risk from what they have done to themselves as well as from what others may do to them. Elizabeth Taylor's novel Angel and Jane Smiley's novel A Thousand Acres represent elderly characters with pathological narcissism and explore the construction and effects of that narcissism.
