Abstract
Kingdom of Urartu, also known as Kingdom of Van, throve in 9th through 7th cent. in the area corresponding to the present-day eastern Turkey, southern Armenia, and northwestern Iran. Although the first written documents emanating from this kingdom are in Akkadian, after a few decades the local kings began to commission cuneiform inscriptions in their native Urartian language, a close relative of Hurrian.
