Abstract

Until 1988 mirex had been reported for only a few locations in the North American Great Lakes, primarily Lake Ontario and the St. Lawrence River due to several localized sources. We report new and confirmed measurements ofmirex in water and fish samples from other Great Lakes, specifically Lakes Erie, Huron, Michigan, and Isle Royale on Lake Superior. Mirex was not found in most sediments. When found, mirex levels in water were similar among all lakes. However, levels in fish were 100 to 200 times lower in Lakes Erie and Huron relative to Lake Ontario. The widespread occurrence of mirex throughout the Great Lakes is of concern but the sources and reasons for the sudden appearance of this pesticide are not clear.
