Abstract

Amongst Christian Pentecostal converts in Sinja, Nepal, miracles happen when they recognize narrative moments of the Bible in fortuitous events of their lives. Their engagement with specific Pentecostal technologies of the imagination like reading the Bible and telling one’s conversion narrative to others causes an outburst of the Word into the world, turning Sinjali converts into the truly Christian subjects of the conversion narratives they tell. Within these accounts, the overlapping of everyday life with the biblical narrative acts as an imaginary device that supports the conversion of unprivileged people in a context in which they do not enjoy much freedom of choice. Fulfilling the promise of a better life, the production of the miracles that I present provides a glimpse of what it might mean to “live in a book”.
