Abstract

A part of David Hume's legacy to the philosophy of religion was the definition of a miracle as a violation o f the laws of nature, and this is now probably the most common notion of what a miracle is. 1 shall argue, however, that this notion, understood as it often is, involves intractable difficulties that make its effective employment in a Christian apology or polemic impossible. An understanding of what is meant by the miraculous as 'violations of natural laws' is fundamental to such an enquiry. To that end I shall offer a definition that is commonly accepted for 'laws of nature ' :
