Abstract

Purpose: A balanced activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway is pivotal to maintain cartilage homeostasis and prevent the onset of osteoarthritis (OA). While the role of ligands and inhibitors of the pathway has already been well explored in the articular cartilage, the effect of fine-tuned modulators such as micro-RNAs has been less investigated. A microarray analysis of human articular chondrocytes stimulated with Wnt3a showed miR-544a, a known modulator of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in different biological contexts, as the most downregulated gene.
