Abstract
A PREREQUISITE for ionospheric work with satellites by means of the Doppler method is the knowledge of the behaviour of the Doppler-frequency shift in free space. A free-space condition prevails, if the operating frequency f is much greater than the maximum plasma frequency. It is the purpose of this communication to present in a general form an equation from which the minimum range between a satellite S and an observer P can be determined and to illustrate the magnitudes of higher-order terms.
