Abstract

Abstract— Natural background radiation and man‐made radiations contribute to the individual and population radiation risks. These are discussed together with the recommendations for population protection. The contribution of dental radiography to these risks is small. The sources of unnecessarily high radiation in dental radiography are discussed. High quality diagnostic X‐rays are an essential part of high quality dental service — these can readily be obtained with minimum radiation exposure to the patient. The important factors to be considered include rectangular collimation of the X‐ray beam.
