Abstract

In this paper, an economical operation of the electrical power systems by solving optimal reactive power dispatch (ORPD) problem which is well known as non-linear, multimodal and mixed variable problem. The minimization of transmission power losses under control and dependent variable constraints of the optimal reactive power dispatch problem is the main objective. In this research, power flow problem is solved to compute precise steady state voltage magnitude and formulate the solution by Newton Raphson iterative method. The proposed Bat Algorithm is successfully implemented on the IEEE standard 30-bus system for minimization of active and reactive power losses of transmission network. The obtained simulation results are compared with conventional and Particle Swarm Optimization technique and it is found that the proposed BAT algorithm gives better results in terms of transmission losses.
