Abstract

Mini-open, lateral, retroperitoneal, transpsoas approaches to the thoracolumbar spine are increasingly being used as alternatives to conventional approaches, with minimization of operative morbidity [1–9]. However, many times open posterior instrumentation is used in conjunction with these less invasive anterior approaches for, in particular, deformity cases, obviating the less-invasive nature of the anterior approach with substantial posterior morbidity. This case illustrates the feasibility of two-column reconstruction of adult deformities using a mini-open lateral approach for interbody fusion with MIS lateral fixation placed through the lateral approach incision and surgical corridor.
