Abstract

ABSTRACTIn this paper, a miniaturized dual broadband hexagonal slot monopole antenna is proposed and investigated. A hexagonal slot antenna with microstrip feed is designed as a reference antenna and optimized for its broadband behavior. First, the miniaturization is investigated by bisecting the reference antenna through its symmetry plane. The dual broadband behavior with further miniaturization is achieved by scaling down the bisected antenna. The proposed antenna is 75.5% miniaturized and have dual broadband behavior as compared to the reference antenna. The proposed antenna from its 10 dB |S11| curve shows that it has the bands from 2.92 to 7.18 GHz and 9.13 to 12.26 GHz, suitable for applications in 5.2/5.8 GHz wireless local area network (WLAN) bands, 3.5/5.5 GHz worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) bands and partially in X-band (radar, terrestrial communications, etc.). The proposed and reference antennas are fabricated and measured. The proposed antenna has optimized dimension of 28 × 14 × 1.5 mm3 and has monopole-like radiation pattern in both the planes (E-plane and H-plane). The measured and simulated results are in good agreement. The proposed antenna has a compact size and exhibits dual broadband behavior, good radiation characteristics, and peak gain from –1.14 to 5.85 dBi.
