Abstract

A miniature thin-layer chromatographic determination of the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio is described. Rapid I.T.L.C. chromatography plates developed in miniature chromatography chambers reduce the chromatography time to 5 min. A sensitive, non-corrosive alcoholic Rhodamine B dye is used to detect microgram quantities of both lecithin and sphingomyelin. Determination of the lecithin/sphingomyelin ratio by this procedure requires less than 30 min.
