Abstract

The distal left ureters of 3 dogs were obstructed for two to three weeks by cellophane wrapping. The wrapping was removed and in 2 dogs simple pull-through ureteroneocystostomies were performed. Roentgen follow-up (four, nine, and ten and one-half months, respectively) of all 3 animals showed gradual development of miniature left kidneys with minimal calyceal changes and good excretion of contrast medium. These changes apparently resulted from temporary ureteral obstruction. Partial or temporary ureteral obstruction is currently considered to be the most important factor in the etiology of “congenital” miniature kidney.
