Abstract

Minerals are used as reinforcements, pigment extenders and fillers in plastics and rubber, as well as in a variety of other end-use applications ranging from paper and paint to building products, and many others. Of all markets, demand for minerals has the highest forecast growth in the plastics sector. According to business consultancy Principia Partners, the total North American demand for these minerals exceeded 15 million tons (c. 13.6 million tonnes), valued at US$1.9 billion, in 2002. Although paper applications dominate, accounting for about half of the volume consumed, plastics have grown substantially over the past decade or so from a minor market to the second largest end use today. Excluding titanium dioxide, the consumption of minerals in North American plastics in 2002 is estimated at 2 million tons (1.8 million tonnes), worth roughly $500 million.
