Abstract

As a part of the programme aimed at investigating the effect of river discharge on the concentration of thorium-bearing resistates in the heavy mineral beach sand deposits at the river mouths, the mineralogy, radioactivity and texture of the sands of the Vamsadhara River and its tributaries have been examined from the source (Doikallu, Orissa State; 19° 44′ 40″ N.; 83° 30′ E.) to the mouth (Kalingapatnam, Andhra Pradesh; 18° 20′ 23″ N.; 84° 8′ E.) of the River. An attempt has been made to trace the effect of provenance, transport, physical and chemical characteristics of the detrital minerals, etc., on the mineralogical constitution and sedimentological characteristics of the river sands.
