Abstract

Dumortierite occurs as blue veinlets in the Miyrang clay deposit, southeastern Korea, which was formed by hydrothermal alteration of andesitic tuff. Dumortierite chemistry shows a little excess in Al contents in the octahedral sites possibly due to common occurrence of the Al-rich minerals such as diaspore, dickite, pyrophyllite, and tourmaline. Cell-dimensions of dumortierite are determined as a=11.71 A, b=20.39 A, c=4.70 A, and volume =1129.48 A3. Dumortierite formed during the early stage of hydrothermal alteration and afterwards pyrophyllite formed by an addition of silica. The presence of dumortierite indicates that boron plays an important role in Al-rich clay mineralization. It is suggested that dumortierite formed by boron metasomatism of aluminous rocks as a result of the intrusion of biotite granite.
