Abstract

Abstract This paper shows that the criteria of mineralogy, chemistry and climatic conditions significantly influence the geotechnical properties of recent sediments of the Niger Delta. Piping was found to be the major source of distress in the central delta due to kaolinite-quartz mineralogy, porosity and climatic conditions. Road failures and erosion are severe in the same region when compared with the smectite-rich eastern and coastal delta. Finally, the potential for lime stabilization is evaluated and lime-cement mixtures, tree sap and reafforestation are recommended.
