Abstract
External renderings play an essential role in the longevity of rammed earth constructions. The most frequent anomalies in these constructions occur due to the interaction between the substrate and the external rendering, as a result of the different characteristics and behaviours of these materials. Their chemical and mechanical compatibility is essential to enhance the longevity of these constructions. In this study the external renderings of 15 old rammed earth constructions, located in the Barlavento algarvio, South Portugal, were characterized by wet chemical analysis, X-ray diffractometry, simultaneous thermogravimetric and differential thermal analysis, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. The compressive strength tests were also applied to the rammed earth substrates. The results are presented and discussed. The mineralogical and mechanical compatibility between the renderings and the substrates is evaluated. The key characteristics are identified in order to design a more compatible replacement rendering.
