Abstract

Calcium is demonstrated by energy and wavelength dispersive X-ray microanalysis to be the major component of the granules that fill the fuselli of the organ of Bellonci in Gammarus setosus. The presence of calcium was confirmed by chelation with EDTA and by other cytochemical techniques. X-ray microanalysis indicated the simultaneous presence of iron in the region of the fuselli occupied by the calcium granules, but this could not be confirmed by cytochemical means in resin-embedded tissue by light or transmission electron microscopy.
