Abstract

Background Newlands is a large scale open-cut export steaming coal mine located in the northern section of the Bowen Basin (see fig. 1). Development began in 1981, with coal mining commencing in 1983. Conventional open-cut stripping methods are used to expose and remove the coal for product preparation. Coal quality factors restrict mining to the Upper Newlands Seam with an average thickness of 7.5 metres. The Coal Preparation Plant. which was designed to produce 4MT/annum, has to date consistently produced in excess of 4.5MT/annum. Product coal is railed to, and exported through, Australia's most northern coal port of Abbot Point. The mine, railway and port facilities were developed by the M.I.M. Group as part of a major expansion by the Company into large scale coal production.
