Abstract

Mindfulness has its origins in the practices of Buddhism and describes meditation exercises to develop mindfulness skills, that is, paying complete attention in a particular way. The practice of mindfulness involves the individual focusing upon internal experiences in each moment in a non-judgemental manner, thereby enhancing awareness of emotions, thoughts and sensations. Training in mindfulness is not only for adherents to Buddhism but has recently attracted attention both for enhancing general mental health and wellbeing but also for its therapeutic value with cognitive therapy and other psychological therapies (Baer, 2003).
