Abstract
Mind-body pain management methods begin with the mind and provide pain relief through an attentional focus. Such management includes hypnosis, biofeedback relaxation, and the bubbleblowing method of behavioral distraction. These active treatments also mobilize a child's coping and recovery skills while controlling anxiety and reliance on medication. Mind-body methods have wide applicability in pediatric practice, do not require a lot of time, and work synergistically with pharmacologic and physical treatments. They fit naturally with the pain experience, and therefore, potentially have a central role in the treatment of pain in children.
