Abstract

In all areas of care for the older person, whether it be in the hospital, nursing home or community, person‐centered care is what is aimed for. Holistic care is person centered. Therefore, what nurses do for older persons, how they do it and how they feel about what they do, all matter. This is the basis for all therapeutic encounters, acting as a creative impetus as well as a buffer from stress. This change in focus supports the patient/client and their families in ways that are empowering, uplifting, hopeful and powerful. It also protects the nurse from burnout.
