Abstract

ABSTRACTThe new city of Milton Keynes is the most successful local economy in the UK and it has some of the UK's lowest house price rises. The city's existence – and its success – can be traced back to its genesis and implementation as one of the last of the UK's new towns. This article explores the evolution of the idea for Milton Keynes and its implementation. It also looks at the roots of new town policy in the campaigning of individuals like Sir Ebenezer Howard, Frederick Osborn and Lord Reith, as well as decisions taken by governments in the 1940s and the 1960s.
