Abstract

Estelle Haan's edition of Milton's Epistolae Familiares, the first for nearly a hundred years to include both Latin texts and English translations, provides a valuable resource for anyone interested in Renaissance literature and humanism. Haan's impressive work of scholarship uses its Introduction and detailed commentary on each letter to give a clear, informative account of Milton's place in the tradition of Neo-Latin poetry and prose and the international scholarly community. These Latin and vernacular letters to friends and colleagues in England and continental Europe illuminate Paradise Lost and Milton's other writings, enabling us to see Milton's career in perspective.
