Abstract

This paper covers the history of the Middleton fl our mill located on the Fleurieu Peninsula , which is related to the development of the railway including South Australia’s fi rst public railway between Goolwa and Pt Elliot and SA’s fl our milling growth. Messrs Tuxford of Adelaide supplied the beam engine and the relationship with Tuxford and Sons of Lincolnshire is developed from primary sources. Several attempts were made to conserve the beam engine by private individuals and after much procrastination by various organisations , and the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society, the engine was eventually scrapped. It is hoped that the paper will encourage others to protect our moveable heritage and demonstrate the dynamic life of museum collections.
