Abstract
A novel and simple method of optical generation of millimetre-wave signals employing four-wave mixing (FWM) effect in a semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) is proposed. This simple approach is capable of generating signals of double, quadruple and six times the microwave source frequency with extremely high spectral purity and stability. A millimetre-wave of 41.7 GHz (6×fundamental) with a 3 dB linewidth of less than 20 Hz and a phase noise of less than −75 dBc/Hz at 1.6 kHz offset is obtained.
