Abstract

Radar is the abbreviation of ‘Radio Detection and Ranging’. It means to detect and estimate distances via the electromagnetic waves. The millimeter wave is an electromagnetic wave that lies between the infrared light wave and the microwave frequency band. Different classification methods are applied on the different classes of the millimeter wave radar. The millimeter wave radar could be classified into pulse radar and continuous wave radar based on the nature of the radar working system. The working mode of the continuous wave radar is further classified into constant frequency continuous wave (CW), frequency shift keying (FSK), phase shift keying (PSK), frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) and other methods. Based on platform classification, it can be categorized into vehicle millimeter wave radar, shipboard millimeter wave radar, airborne millimeter wave radar, spaceborne millimeter wave radar, etc. According to the different requirements of radar ranging, millimeter-wave radar can be classified into long-range radar (LRR), medium-range radar (MRR) and short-range radar (SRR). Additionally, based on field of application, millimeter-wave radar can be classified into guided radar, fire control radar, target detection radar, millimeter-wave earth observation radar, millimeter wave proximity detection radar, etc.
