Abstract

Formerly restricted mainly to the East Coast, xylazine, a dangerous (if misused) animal tranquilizer, is moving into the West, according to a new epidemiological report from Millenium Health. Based on an analysis of 160,000 urine drug tests this year from treatment programs, xylazine — which is now present on the street combined with illicit fentanyl — is emerging as a threat in California, Oregon, New Mexico and Alaska, as well as the Rocky Mountain states. Currently, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Ohio have the highest rates of xylazine positivity in the nation.
