Abstract

The Period of the National Struggle constitutes one of the most significant phases in Turkish history. This period, influenced occupation forces and their supporters as well, has importance for Science of History in terms of its being researched and enlightened in every respect. Although the period of National Struggle has been covered in many studies in general, it is a fact that there are very few local-based studies. Consequently, examining this period and writing on it from the perspective of the local will make a great contribution to the general studies and the history of the country. Local history studies have a complementary role in general studies as well as revealing many characteristics of the town in question. This study, named Siirt During the National Struggle, was made by conducting a very extensive archive research. This study aims to explain the conditions of the Siirt sanjak during the National Struggle, its social and political structure, its administrative situation, the support of people to the National Struggle, the public meetings, the telegrams, people’s attitude against separatist activities, their efforts for the liberation of the homeland and their work in the light of archival documents. This study explicitly indicates the ardor of people of Siirt for the liberation of the homeland during the Period of the National Struggle. The most important aspect of this study is that it examines this period from a local perspective and is carried out by doing a thorough archive research. Owing to the profound information provided by the archive documents and the contribution of the research, the opportunity to make an authentic and scientific study has been found.
