Abstract

Milky disease is a pathologica1 condition of scarabeid larvae caused by an infection with either Bacillus popilliae Dutky or B. lentimorbus Dutky. Bacterial spores were introduced into Delaware in the early 1940’s for control of Popillia japonica Newman. Sampling of sod for grubs in the summer and fall of 1972 indicated that the disease was active at the original colonization sites. These sites have a lower grub population density than other areas. Locations where the disease has been naturally introduced have a higher population but grub populations in locations free from milky-spore disease were the highest.
