Abstract

The system dynamics of a milking machine vacuum system were analyzed. The effects of vacuum pump capacity, reserve tank, and pipeline sizes were examined using a mathematical model and dynamic system analysis techniques. A large vacuum pump can reduce the net pressure momentum change caused by low frequency accidental air leaks but has little effect on periodic variations. System internal volume has the opposite effect. A large internal volume can reduce periodic variations but has little effect on net pressure momentum change caused by low frequency air leaks. Air pipelines should be sized for dynamic performance and vacuum drop minimization.
