Abstract
Milk has formed an important part of diets in the UK for many years and its use has generally received favourable support from physicians and governments. Government support has included the provision of cheap or free milk to children and nursing mothers, and subsidies on production and consumption, the deliberate increase of supplies during the 1939—45 war was part of a successful endeavour to balance diets in times of scarcity.
