Abstract
The study of military dress has long been marginalized, but the time is now right to absorb the subject into a rejuvenated historiographical current, taking into account the new dimensions of military history. The study of military dress is not popular in the academic world; combining as it does the failings long associated with both costume and military history. Until recently it could be argued that costume is a mere object of contemplation for fashion fanatics more interested in aesthetics than in historical criticism, and military history a speciality limited to the erudition of fanatics of strategic and tactical evolution.
