Abstract

In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, DeBarros and colleagues1 describe efforts to deal with low cardiothoracic (CT) surgery clinical volume in military hospitals. There are 3 questions: (1) is the current number of active-duty CT surgeons needed given the low volume? (2) are CT surgeons needed in deployed wartime operations? and (3) can partnerships with civilian hospitals develop and maintain the skills of military surgeons?
