Abstract

This little volume needs neither the foreword by Dr. Dexter M. Bullard nor the introduction by Dr. David M. Rioch. It can stand on its own. The humility of the author expressed throughout his book is best exemplified by his opening paragraph, in which he states: As a group our encumbrances were few. We possessed little research experience, a compensatory lack of presuppositions regarding method, and membership in no particular 'school' or fashion of psychiatric theory. Three and a half years after their experiment began, the investigators through Doctor Artiss have published their results. A somewhat discordant note appears in the presentation of results in that it is stated: ... that recovery figures in the vicinity of eighty per cent may be feasible with further knowledge relative to (1) selection of patients, (2) selection and training of staff members, (3) staff intercommunication systems, and (4) mores and values of patient
