Abstract Aiming to provide a basis for future research, the study presents the findings of surveys on the characteristics of Hungarian ego-centric interpersonal networks since the eighties, focusing especially on the change in the proportion of kin and non-kin ties, friendships and weak ties, and the different features of interpersonal networks of men and women.
