Abstract

The article describes the diplomatic activity of Mikhail Nikolayevich von Giers. He made a brilliant career in the Russian Empire; during the October Revolution he was the Russian ambassador to Italy and the doyen of the Russian foreign diplomatic corps. Throughout the pre-revolutionary period Mikhail Nikolayevich did a lot to improve the activity of the diplomatic corps. He became one of the founders of the unique “state outside borders” — the Russia Аbroad, and took an active part in working out the new statute of a stateless person and the so-called “Nansen certificate”. On a parallel with that, he participated in solving all issues of importance to the refugee community. He did all in his power to help his compatriots so that they could eventually return to their homeland and contribute to the rebirth of Russia.
