Abstract

Johann Christian Mikan's Delectus Florae et Faunae Brasiliensis (fol., Vienna), botanically and zoologically important for the new species of plants, lepidoptera, birds, snakes, tortoises and monkey described and beautifully illustrated therein with hand-coloured lithographed plates, is dated 1820 on the title-page. Internal evidence, e.g. a reference under plate 7 to anno 1821 and fasciculum hujus operis primum anno 1820 editum, under plate 12 to Mars 1821, under plate 15 to anno elapso 1822 and under plate 17 to 1822, reveals that parts of the work certainly appeared later than 1820. Unaware that A. Wetmore had published as long ago as 1925, in an ornithological journal (The Auk, 42 : 283), a description of a copy in original wrappers, I searched for contemporary evidence as to the contents and dates of publication of the parts.
