Abstract

A harmonious union of aesthetic and technical considerations, the Miho Museum Bridge was designed as the processional entrance to the Miho Museum in Shigaraki, Japan. The bridge was intended as a transition between the region's beautifully rugged terrain and the Miho Museum. Design and construction of the bridge also formed a transition between architectural and structural design considerations. To reach the museum, visitors must pass through a concrete tunnel, across a ravine. Opened in October 1997, the Miho Museum Bridge uses innovative engineering systems to span this 120 m ravine between the tunnel and the museum. The bridge consists of a structural steel space frame 2 m deep, with post-tensioned cables cantilevering the bridge from its root and anchor - the concrete tunnel. (A)
