Abstract

AbstractThis chapter summarizes the findings from some radar-based field studies of migrations of insect species of major economic importance in Africa, North America and East Asia. Similar investigations that have been made, mostly quite recently, of the migratory flights of beneficial insects (predators and parasitoids) are also presented. Studies on the following insect pests are included: Oedaleus senegalensis and other Sahelian grasshoppers, Choristoneura fumiferana in Canada, Nilaparvata lugens and other planthoppers and leafhoppers in China and the Philippines, Mythimna separata, Loxostege sticticalis, Helicoverpa armigera, Spodoptera exigua, Cnaphalocrocis medinalis and Omiodes indicata.
