Abstract
Significance Ahead of the parliamentary elections, the governing New Democracy (ND) party is pledging to reinforce Greece’s land border with Turkey. The cabinet’s Akritas Plan aims to curb illegal migration by extending the 38-kilometre fence in place in Evros district. Impacts The reinforced fence in the Evros region could shift migration flows to the Aegean Sea, increasing the probability of lethal accidents. Bulgaria and other EU member-states will be encouraged to expand fences along their borders with third countries. ND may use the migration issue to divert attention from domestic political scandals eroding its popularity.
