Abstract

One of the key concerns of midwives regarding statutory midwifery supervision has been the conflicting role of supervisor and manager (Isherwood, 1988; Flint, 1993; Kirkham, 1994; Walton, 1995). The debate centres on whether an individual should undertake the dual role of supervisor and manager, an arrangement that can result in the blurring of boundaries between the roles and in consequence dissonance for midwives. This study was undertaken to determine midwives' views of supervision in a local maternity unit when supervision was in the process of being evaluated. The aim of the review was to increase the profile of supervision and of supervisors within the local maternity unit, by assessing the views of midwives on a number of key issues.
