Abstract

Every pregnant woman in New Zealand is entitled to a lead maternity carer (LMC), who can either be an obstetric GP or midwife. The LMC provides care for the woman throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. In order to ensure an uniformity of midwifery care that is consistently of a high standard, the New Zealand College of Midwives (NZCOM) has facilitated the establishment of midwifery standards review committees (MRSCs) throughout New Zealand. MSRCs offer an LMC midwife the opportunity to review her practice according to the 10 standards of midwifery practice, devised by the NZCOM. The aim of the review is to encourage the midwife in areas of excellence and to point out any areas that need development. This article describes the MRSC in Gisborne, New Zealand, the process of review, and how I felt empowered as a midwife during the process of review.
