Abstract

A system is outlined for the collection of alphanumeric information and data on organisms in culture collections, for storage on magnetic tape, and for selective retrieval by a computer. Information is recorded on standard forms and transferred to cards by key punch operators. The generic and specific names of the organisms are automatically compared with reference lists to check for authenticity, synonymy, type, and correct spelling before the entry is recorded on magnetic tape. Minor errors in spelling are corrected. Existing information can be changed, added to, or deleted. Programs have been written to produce lists or catalogs of species in individual collections and of a group of collections. Other programs for selective retrieval of information can be written. The system has sufficient flexibility to enable the user to establish the kinds of information stored and to design according to his requirements the formats of selective retrieval operations.
