Abstract

Because larger electrical power generating installations, both hydro and nuclear, will be increasingly distant from user areas and because of the desirability of placing future power transmission systems underground or underwater, alternate approaches to overhead power transmission systems have become worthy of consideration. This paper investigates the advantages and disadvantages of a proposed underwater microwave power transmission system.A preliminary investigation and cost evaluation has been made to establish the state-of-the-art and projected cost for the construction of the proposed system. The investigation considers electric power conversion to microwave form, waveguide transmission and end use of the transmitted microwave power. The proposed long distance, high power(multi-gigawatt) system is compared on a cost and technical basis with existing and proposed EHV systems. As a result of the study, recommendations for future microwave power transmission development are made.
