Abstract

A Gunn diode is used as both a microwave oscillator and detector in a new technique to measure electron densities in a plasma. The circuit bears some resemblance to an earlier modulated reflection-type of interferometer but the principle of its operation is quite different since it depends on the frequency-pulling effects of the load on the Gunn diode. It has the advantage of significantly reducing the number of waveguide components.
